On the 14 January the Family History Society of Buchan celebrated its fourth anniversary by the Official Opening of its superb new Family History Centre. John Wallace the Chief Executive of the Peterhead Port Authority was invited to formally open the Centre.
The Committee of the FHSB were delighted to host the following invited guests; Dr Eilidh Whiteford MP for Banff and Buchan, Cllr Steven Smith, representativee from neighbouring Family History Societies, various Aberdeenshire Council departments and other groups including Peterhead Projects.
Alan Fakley, the Society’s Chairman cordially welcomed everyone and gave a short speech highlighting the Society’s history, its role within the community and its relevance in the 21st century. Sincere thanks were passed on to all those involved in establishing the new Centre. In particular, the Society’s appreciation was conveyed to Mr John Reid and Mr Sandy Simpson for all their resourcefulness and hard work in preparing the Centre.
Alan then invited John Wallace to officially open the Centre; John spoke warmly about the new Centre and its superb facilities. He also spoke on genealogy and family history and its importance in preserving local history. John then opened the new Centre by signing the visitor’s book.
A superb buffet, prepared by Heather Lawson, followed and all committee members and invited guests mingled and inspected the new facility.
Following the ceremony Dr Eilidh Whiteford MP commented that “Family History and genealogical research is becoming increasingly popular and is becoming an important part of local tourism. This fantastic new facility is a credit to the hard work of the volunteers who have taken the Society forward from its formation just a few short years ago.
I congratulate the Family History Society of Buchan on their impressive facility and resources within and I’m sure that it will become an important stopping-off point for visitors to the town”
The new Centre is located at 22 Harbour Street, Peterhead, AB42 1DJ and is open 10:30 to 16:00 Mon – Fri and on Saturday when volunteers are available.
